Haleeva Sunshine Resort: Pictures, Reviews and Rates

A new "resort" (late 2008), Haleeva Sunshine consists of a row of the ubiquitous Ao Nang shop-houses that have been restructured inside and given the "contemporary Thai style" design treatment. The small open area at the back has been transformed into a pretty pool and garden, with a fantastic view over the Ao Nang Cliffs. So what could have been another anonymous guesthouse, like those on the opposite side of the street, is now an interesting hotel and something a little different on the Ao Nang hotel scene.

Located right next to The Cliff Resort, and opposite Tropical Herbal Spa, Haleeva is slightly "out of town" - though with the commercial area creeping outwards you will not have far to walk to get to shops and restaurants. The beach itself is around 700 metres away.

The hotel entrance is directly on the main road down to the beach and all the rooms overlook either this road or the fabulous Ao Nang cliffs to the rear - and the rooms on the upper floors (stairs only) also enjoy that rare thing in Ao Nang - a (partial) sea view.

Haleeva has recently (summer 2010) seen a complete change in management: a younger family member has taken over, bringing with him a fresh, more friendly and informal style to the place: room rates have been lowered, and more in the way of services (tour and travel arrangements) are now on offer, making this a good value place to stay.

Think of Haleeva as a budget hotel with some deluxe touches: a small swimming pool and a couple of well-priced suite rooms; or an upmarket guesthouse: young flashpackers would feel right at home, as would families or groups of friends.

Rooms
There are currently two types of room available at Haleeva Sunshine. The most basic are the 24sqm Superior rooms, located on the upper floors. These are either road-facing, with a balcony; or cliff facing (better view, but no balcony) and come with one double or two single beds.

Two of the Superior rooms, formerly known as Grand Superior rooms, are significantly larger, at 37 sqm, with king size beds. The bathroom in these rooms, however, is strangely very small, and (like all the rooms here) has no separate shower stall, meaning the whole floor and toilet get wet every time you turn it on.

Five Deluxe rooms (in fact suites) are located on the ground floor and stretch from the back to the front of the building. They consist of two rooms; a double bedroom and a living space, separated by a huge bathroom with sliding doors that can be left open. This bathroom has a rain shower. The rear balcony is large and has an oversized jacuzzi bathtub from which you can enjoy the view over the garden and cliffs. The suite would be ideal for a family, or a couple on a romantic break.

All rooms are decorated in contemporary Thai style, which translates as cream walls and floors with dark wood furniture, plus highlight colours on the walls and soft furnishings in rich, jewel tones. Tasteful canvases of orchids and other Thai symbols are the only decoration.

Each room also has a day bed, which has a thin foam mattress. This is used as an extra bed when children or a third adult is sleeping in the room. The deluxe room daybed is a large single sofa bed that could sleep two small children.

All rooms are non-smoking, though smoking is permitted on the balconies.
