MOST of Krabi Town and Ao Nang have ADSL (broadband) access, which is quite reliable. This is available from the government phone company (TOT), as well as private ISPs through a TT&T landline. The coverage is spreading slowly throughout Krabi, although it may be a while before it reaches the islands and Railay.
Other tourist areas often have a satellite connection in internet cafes, which gives a better speed than dial-up. You should note that not every house you rent or buy will automatically have a phone line installed - and the waiting list is usually several months, so do check before you rent / buy if this is important for you.
Unlocked mobile telephones are widely available (or bring your old cell phone and have it unlocked here). Domestic calls are quite cheap - most operate on a pay-as-you-go system, with top-up cards and no registration required. The top-up cards also include GPRS internet connection - which is slow but can be used at a pinch for checking email etc. if your phone is enabled. Network coverage is widespread in all but the most remote areas - and look out for 'blackspots' behind one or other of those famous Krabi rocks.
