Krabi Tropical Beach Resort: Pictures, Reviews and Rates

Krabi Tropical Beach Resort (also known as KT Bay Resort) is a low-rise property situated directly on Ao Nam Mao beach. This beach is located to the south of Railay, around five minutes drive from Ao Nang and 15 minutes from Krabi Town, and is known mainly for its boat pier (longtails leave from here to East Railay) and the 'shell fossil' geological phenomenon at its far end.

The beach itself is a wild stretch with little tourist development along its 5km length (although there are plenty of local people living in this area) and is made up of a mixture of sand, rocks and mud - the latter exposed at low tide (see picture slideshow, left). The view from the shore is spectacular, overlooking the islands of Poda and Gai (Chicken Island), and the cliffs of Railay.

Apart from its beachfront location, Krabi Tropical Beach itself has two major factors in its favour: solitude (without isolation) and genuine family accommodation. You won't find many other tourists in this part of Krabi and the beach is always empty; however, the resort is on the main road to Ao Nang and the free resort shuttle bus means you can easily dine out or go shopping there in the evening.

The family apartments have been designed by the owners themselves (a Thai-German couple), who have young children of their own. They comprise two separate rooms: a living / dining area with fully equipped kitchenette, which opens out either on to the beachfront swimming pool, or to the garden, and a bedroom with two large king-size beds.

Like the rest of the rooms, they are tastefully appointed with adjustable lighting, dark wood furniture and Thai fabrics. Each room has a private terrace. As all the family apartments are on the ground floor with direct access to the pool, they are wheelchair accessible; however the bathroom will possibly require a helper to use.

The resort pool is small, but adequate for the 15 rooms. It is saltwater (no chlorine) and overlooks the beach - there is also a separate jacuzzi pool close by the sand. The beachfront bar and restaurant serves Thai and Italian food, and sunset cocktails are popular here.

Facilities: Krabi Tropical Beach Resort has the kind of modern facilities we would like to see available in every resort in Ao Nang. Wireless internet access (charged at 100 baht per day), so you can use your laptop anywhere within the resort (there is also a desktop terminal with free high-speed access in the lobby); free sea canoe and mountain bike rental; and in-house bakery and pizza delivery! (The owners also have an Italian restaurant in Ao Nang, Lavinia.)

In-room, a TV with satellite channels, private safe, fridge with minibar, hairdryer, a/c, hot water shower, torch, beach towels and tea and coffee making facilities are standard. The family apartments also have a kitchen - dining room with bar, dining table, gas ring, sink, full-size fridge, and plates, cutlery, glasses and cooking utensils. Baby cots are provided free of charge (subject to availability).

KT Bay also has a saltwater swimming pool, beach side bar and restaurant and a small children's playground. A free shuttle bus to Ao Nang beach is available evenings only at 8pm and 9pm (return 20 mins later); taxis are easily found if you wish to return later. Any tours or day trips will include return transfers to the resort; the boat pier is a 200m walk from the resort for trips to the local islands and Railay.

There is 24 hour security and off-street car parking is also available. The resort has been completely renovated in summer 2007.
