Sabai Resort: Pictures, Reviews and Rates

Small, family-friendly and charmingly Italian: Sabai Resort is comfortingly familiar for westerners spending their first holiday in Asia. Even for those who know the area, it's a nice place to come back to at the end of the day.

The Scarpella family, who own the resort, de-camped to Krabi en masse around eight years ago and set up business here, on Nopparat Thara beach, a short 90m walk from the main road and the sea. The 17 bungalows are situated in a pretty garden, with swimming pool, games room as well as an excellent, locally renowned restaurant.

The majority of guests are return visitors and are mostly here to relax: despite the occasional late night in the restaurant, it's a quiet place that goes early to bed.The nightlife of Ao Nang is, however, a short tuk-tuk ride away.

The multi-lingual family has good relations with local tour operators and can arrange any number of activities for guests, as well as motorbike rental. Service is generally friendly and helpful and special requests (e.g. for adjacent bungalows) are almost always accommodated.

Rooms
There are 17 individual bungalows, of various sizes, comprising bedroom and bathroom. They are tiled throughout and furnished simply and not especially stylishly, but they are scrupulously clean and tidy. The plot of land is quite small, so all are near the swimming pool and reception area.

All accommodation comes with an outside terrace, hot water shower (no bathtub) and fridge. Standard rooms come with a choice of fan or air con, which is simply switched on if required. They are available as double, twin, or triple (air con only, one single and one double bed).

The deluxe air con rooms and family bungalows are actually one and the same: the price difference reflects their occupancy. They are considerably larger than the standard rooms, with a bed, sitting area, small kitchen and dining table (all in the same room - see our pictures above). There is one double bed and one sofa bed, which is pulled out when 3 or 4 people are staying there. This sofa bed does not have a sprung mattress and is not suitable for two adults.

In fact, as the price of a family bungalow is simply double that of a standard air con room, we would recommend booking two separate standard rooms for a family of 4 with older children, especially if a kitchen is not a priority. You will feel much less cramped as well as maintaining some privacy!

Facilities
All accommodation has either fan or air con, hot water, fridge and can be supplied with an extra bed for children for 300B per night. Baby cots can also be provided on request. A safe deposit box is available in the resort office.

There is no television in any of the rooms, as the family "don't want people sitting inside all day," as Tania Scarpella puts it. Instead there is a large and sociable playroom, with a TV, table football, ping-pong table, board games and small library of books for guests' entertainment.

The resort also has a new swimming pool and an excellent restaurant, Da Carla e Poan, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It serves some of the best Italian food in Ao Nang. Other services include tour counter, telephone (in office) and motorbike rental.
