Krabi, and Ao Nang in particular, can be difficult for the budget-conscious traveller. There are, however, several nice places that fall into the budget category and you should be able to find good quality accommodation in private double or twin rooms for 800 – 1800 baht per night (around US$25 – $60) during the tourist high season (Nov – April). Much better deals can be found during the months of May – October, when price-cutting and promotions mean even mid-range hotels can become budget options.
There is, of course, even cheaper accommodation available if you are prepared to turn up and look for it; unfortunately none of these places reliably accept reservations. During high season, decent backpacker rooms with basic facilities (fan and cold water only) on the remoter beaches can be found for around 400 baht. Try Tonsai Beach, parts of Koh Lanta, and Koh Jum. Super cheap rooms come in at around 200 – 300 baht, although do not offer much in the way of cleanliness or comfort.
If you don’t mind sharing, there are also plenty of places offering nice dorm-style accommodation. As these are all new (most are less than five years old), facilities tend to be clean, and some thought has been put into design, with varying success. Many of the dorms are in “party hostels” so if this ambience bothers you (or the opposite!), take note. It’s easy to find out the type of place from the description and reviews.
Guesthouse style accommodation can also be had for a song during May – October, especially if you turn up and bargain. Krabi Town and Ao Nang excel in this type of flashpacker room, with a/c, TV and various mod-cons.
