Topic: Krabi Beach Clean-up 2009

A report on the International Clean Up Day, organised by Kon-Tiki Diving and Projects Abroad. Written by Malene Jensen, manager of Kon-Tiki Krabi.

This year the International Clean Up Day was held on 30th September due to the Ramadan festival, it was an great and eventful day with many different weather conditions.

The day started at 7.30am at our dive center where we packed all the necessities into the different trucks and then headed off to our five posts on Ao Nang and Nopparat Thara beaches.

Around 9am we were joined by 215 children from Ao Nang school, Klong Haeng school, Ao Nammao school, Ban Laem Pho school and Nawattaphume International school.

After briefings on the correct ways to clean up safely we got down to the business of picking up the rubbish. The children were off like a swarm of locusts taking any rubbish and putting it into their rubbish bags. It was around 9.30am when things started to turn bad: looking out to sea the sky had turned black and the islands we normally can see had disappeared. Two minutes later a strong wind blew from the sea and into Ao Nang, it was closely followed by very heavy rain: tropical storm Ketsana had arrived in Krabi province!

We got the children into shelter to ride out the storm and after about 30 min. the wind dropped and the rain eased off and we made the decision to get everyone back to the National Park headquarters on Nopparat Thara beach. Once everyone had arrived the rain stopped completely and the children then carried on with the cleaning in the National Park area.

Once everything was cleaned, it was time for the grand raffle, over 50 prizes had been donated and with ticket sales we made around 10,000 baht to goto Project AWARE, PADI’s charity. So Kon-Tiki would like to thank everyone who bought a ticket and congratulations to everyone who won a prize!

Following the raffle was the lunch, which was a delicious chicken and pumpkin curry. Followed by muffins and cake which were very popular with the children!

Then it was photo time, everyone was invited to be in the picture along with the 215kgs of rubbish we collected this year. After the pictures were taken all the children received their certificates and their cloth bags, to go along with this years theme “Say no to plastic bags”.

So overall it was another successful clean up day even if the weather didn’t help us out so much.
