Topic: Krabi Marina to open end of March

The mayor of Krabi, Mr Kiratisak Phukhaoluan, has announced that the new Krabi River Marina will open on schedule at the end of March 2010.

The project, which has 42 million baht of central governement funding from the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, is located on the banks of the Krabi River, slightly past the Thara Park, towards the river mouth. The mayor reported on 2 February 2010 that 80% of the work on the marina was now completed and that even with any unexpected setbacks, it should open by end of March.

The marina is expected to attract boats from all over the Asian region, which currently have only temporary moorings offshore in areas such as Ao Nang and Koh Phi Phi. The mayor of Krabi feels this will be a welcome new addition to the marinas along the southern Andaman Coast - especially as the existing berths in Phuket, Penang and Langkawi Island are very congested. The marina is expected to generate a revenue of around 6 million baht per year.
