Topic: availability of longtails

We'll be in Ao Nanag towards the end of February, and would like to hire a longtail boat for snorkeling, either with a group or privately. Do we need to reserve ahead of time? Any recommended operators? What's the going rate? Thanks.

No need to book in advance - and I actually strongly recommend you don't for various reasons: weather / under or overestimation of what you can actually get done in the heat / getting here and changing your mind / online advance prices usually more expensive than booking here.

For longtail boat charter, you simply turn up at the beach on the morning you wish to travel, purchase a coupon at the booth for the destination you would like and a boat and driver is assigned to you. Be prepared with lunch, drinks etc. as there are very limited to no services out on the islands.

For an organised tour, you will need to book the night before - agents either in your hotel or on the beach road stay open until around 10pm. Most operators offer very similar itineraries and experiences. Two of the locally run ones (so your money will be benefiting Ao Nang villagers rather than going out of the area) are Green Planet tours and Barracuda Tours. Rates vary according to the destination chosen, but are usually around 350 - 650 baht per day including lunch & soft drinks.
