High tech gimmicks in an unbeatable location
The L Resort – the newly renovated Andaman Sunset Resort – combines a great location with the latest in modern hotel amenities. Its focus on “lifestyle” means that the usual in-room experience is enhanced with a variety of gadgets: TVs are huge 40″ LED displays; there is an iPod dock; lights and air conditioning are controlled via touch screen; alongside the standard travel kettle is an espresso machine; and your personal iPad connects you with staff to order breakfast, massage treatments, taxis or other services.
Most of the accommodation is in bungalows known as “The Lite”, spread out in a garden behind the main entrance. At 30sqm, they are spacious and decorated in contemporary style, with the The L’s signature purple accent colours. Also in the garden are “The Large” rooms, located in 2 storey buildings (ground and upper floors), which have additional space (40sqm total) for a small indoor seating area. Room facilities are upgraded with this change in category (see below for details).
The final word in luxury, however, goes to The Larger and The L suites: proper suites, with separate living and sleeping areas, these rooms have a premium price tag. They are on the second floor above the reception lobby at the front of the resort; most overlook the Andaman Sea.
This is because The L Resort also enjoys a near perfect location. It is one of only a handful of hotels situated directly on Ao Nang’s beach front road, allowing you access to all the shops and restaurants as soon as you step out the front door. Do note however, that this, plus the neighbouring nightlife plaza, can mean some rooms are disturbed by traffic or music. Double glazing does prevent most noise coming through, but it may be an issue for light sleepers.
The large pool area is located behind the reception, so is not overlooked by the street: it is open and pleasant and has a waterfall and jacuzzi, as well as an all-day pool bar. The hotel restaurant, Wannas Place, is at street level and serves Thai food as well as grilled meats on a hot stone.
