Thip Residence is a very nice, friendly and spotlessly clean hotel that’s actually very conveniently located, despite being “off the beaten path” in terms of tourists. There’s a pier to go to Railay and the islands a short walk away, a beach right across the road (swimmable at high tide only; at low tide a bit swampy and rocky), and good transport links to both Krabi Town and Ao Nang. The hotel also offers free bicycles to explore the immediate area and a tour and activity desk to help you organise day trips etc. English is spoken well here and service is above average as the owners also run the place.
Following a recent revamp to a “boutique” style, the 22 rooms are looking very nice – particularly the deluxe category. They are all generously sized and have en-suite bathrooms and private balconies; some are also available as connecting units for families. They are sound-proofed, or seem to be anyway as there is no traffic noise in the rooms at all (not that the road outside is very busy anyway). There is also free wireless internet (Wi-Fi) available in rooms and downstairs – amazing for the price!
The swimming pool is located a quiet garden at the rear of the property; this feature makes Thip Residence a more family-friendly option, as well as truly excellent value for money. The only major downside of this hotel is that there is not much in the way of nightlife or restaurants nearby – in the evenings the area is deserted. Thip does have its own restaurant serving decent Thai food, but those seeking more options, including shopping and bars, will have to head to Ao Nang, a 10 minute drive away – there are local buses available during the day, though at night the only option is a taxi.
During high and peak season, however, Thip Residence will make an excellent budget choice for those who wish to avoid the heaving crowds in Ao Nang while still being in a good position to explore the region.
